Ensuring water for fertile soils in Cuanza-Sul, as well as equipment, this large agricultural production hub of cotton and local crops provides greater food security and income generation not only for families in the region but also for the country.
Project details
Located in the province of Cuanza-Sul, Perímetro Irrigado do Sumbe occupies 5.000 hectares – of which 2.800 hectares have the irrigation system installed – that will directly benefit 800 families. The main objective of the project was to revitalise the cotton crop (fulfilling the region’s potential), to increase the income of local farmers, to create an influx of population to the project area. Its priority is the cultivation of cotton, corn, vegetables and fruits. And it is ideal for animal production, namely eggs and creation of broiler chickens. The area has roads to the perimeter, which is located 100 meters from the EN 100.
Sumbe Irrigated Perimeter involved the construction of two pumping stations and three reservoirs; the laying of 200 kilometers of piping for the irrigation system for the deforestation of 1.509 hectares; the implementation of an electrical substation with a capacity of 6,6 KV; a maintenance workshop; the construction of warehouses; and the construction of a rural village with the projection of 250 houses (with 85 agricultural social housing already concluded).
It has a pumping system (with two water pumping stations, with 4 pumps each); water collection (and treatment area for the residences), three water reservoirs (29.000 m³, 15.360 m³ and 10.3100 m³) and a private cotton ginning factory.
Today there are eight communities in the region, with around 400 families who have started to grow crops on an experimental basis, especially watermelon and maize.
The investments considered relevant for the project are:
- Agricultural material production unit
- Feed production unit
- Processing unit/finished products
- Limestone production unit.
